If John wasn’t born with a hammer in his hand, he soon found one. At the age of nine John and his playmate built a seven-story fort (short stories) in the backyard of his San Francisco home. By 14 he was providing minor remodeling and repair services for his neighbors. During high school John attended John O’Connell Trade School and after graduating, he entered the Carpenter’s Union and worked for a residential remodeling contractor for eight years. John mastered every aspect of carpentry when, among other projects, he built seventeen custom homes in San Mateo. In 1968 John went to work for a firm specializing in interior remodeling of commercial buildings. He was quickly promoted to Foreman in charge of the production of 25 carpenters. His responsibilities included coordinating and overseeing multiple job sites concurrently, scheduling workloads and ensuring timelines and deadlines were met.
